Tennis. WTA - Sydney - Muguruza prend une wild-card pour Sydney

La fédération australienne de tennis, Tennis Australia, a annoncé jeudi que l'actuelle numéro 2 mondiale Garbine Muguruza avait accepté une wild card pour le tournoi de Sydney, qui se tient la semaine avant l'Open d'Australie. Le choix de l'Espagnole de jouer à Sydney est certainement motivé par la volonté d'avoir davantage de matchs dans les jambes avant Melbourne, elle qui a dû abandonner lors de son premier match à Brisbane en raison de crampes. Le tableau Sydney qui comptait déjà la présence de Venus Williams, Petra Kvitova, Angelique Kerber, Johanna Konta ou encore Jelena Ostapenko continuer donc de se renforcer avec l'arrivée de Garbine Muguruza. "Cette wild card est une bonne opportunité pour moi de reprendre la compétitition et de jouer plusieurs matchs avant le premier grand chelem de l'année à Melbourne. Le tableau de Sydney est incroyablement relevé et il n'y aura aucun match facile." a commenté l'Espagnole dans un communiqué.

World No.2 Garbiñe Muguruza joins the lineup at next week's Premier event at Sydney Olympic Park, which features four Top 10 players.
SYDNEY, Australia - After a premature exit from this week's Brisbane International, World No.2 Garbiñe Muguruza has accepted a wildcard to next week's Premier event in Sydney, Tennis Australia announced on Thursday.
Forced to retire as she succumbed to cramps during a gruelling second round match against Aleksandra Krunic in Brisbane, Muguruza joins a women's field which now features seven Grand Slam champions.
The Spaniard joins reigning Roland Garros and US Open champions Jelena Ostapenko and Sloane Stephens, seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams, two time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova, 2016 Australian and US Open champion Angelique Kerber and Australia’s 2011 US Open champion Sam Stosur - who also received a wildcard.
The reigning Wimbledon champion will be the top seed alongside Williams, Ostapenko and Johanna Konta.
“I’ve only played in Sydney once before and I really enjoyed the conditions there, and the beautiful city,” said Muguruza, who reached the last eight in her lone appearance in Sydney in 2015.
“This wildcard is a very valuable opportunity for me get back on the court and hopefully play a few more matches before the first Grand Slam of the year in Melbourne. The Sydney draw is incredibly strong and there will be no easy matches.”
